If it happens that you are introduced with a flapping mirror one day when you come into your vehicle, don't be despaired. It is one of lots of tiny car irritations, but it can be handled -- & you do not have to pay a mechanic to repair it.
Notice: Humidity can sabotage your efforts to replace your rearview mirror. If feasible, wait for a dry day before trying this procedure.
1. Use the scraper to scrape tidy the area where the mirror was formerly attached. If the scraper blade is sharp , even the toughest adhesive will yield to it.
2. Pour some alcohol onto a paper towel or cloth & use it to wipe down the area you have scraped tidy in order to remove any grease, oils, or remaining adhesive. Permit the windshield to dry for at least four minutes.
3. Check the attachment point of the mirror. You'll notice the presence of a tiny U-shaped button in the receptacle of the attachment point. It is imperative that you remove this button. In some cases, it is secured with a tiny screw, which it will be necessary for you to remove first. Usually, however, it is basically snapped in to place. In this instance, use the pliers to press down the metal flange holding it in, & use the screwdriver to pry out the button.
4. One time you have removed the button (however you managed it), carefully use the scraper to remove all traces of adhesive from its face. Then tidy the button with alcohol. Permit it to dry for four minutes.
5. When the button is dry, place it against the spot on the windshield where you'd like the mirror to be attached. Make positive that it is in the appropriate spot, because one time it is on, it is not something you can basically remove again.
6. Make positive that the bowed finish of the U-shaped button is facing UPWARD. Then use the crayon or marker to trace around the button. When you remove the button, the area where you need to put in it will be marked. Set the button aside for now.
7. Open the repair kit & CAREFULLY read the instructions. The kit usually includes a tiny tube of adhesive, a vial of adhesive activator, & sometimes a spare button, in case you have lost yours. Fortunately, the whole set up doesn't cost over a few dollars.
8. Remove the activator container. The liquid inside is absolutely necessary to activate the adhesive; without it, the glue is noxious-smelling goo. In most cases, the activator is packaged in a tiny plastic vial consisting of a reservoir of liquid separated from a swab by a narrow piece of glass (kind of like elderly Mercurochrome swabs, in case you can keep in mind back that far). Squeeze the vial to break the glass, allowing the liquid to soak the swab.
9. Liberally paint the marked area on the windshield with the activator. In case you like, you can coat the inner face of the button as well. Permit both surfaces to dry for at least four minutes.
10. Remove the adhesive tube from the kit & cut off the tip with the scissors. Squeeze one large drop of the adhesive onto the middle of the inner face of the button. Don't overdo it.
11. Place the gluey side of the button onto the marked area of the windshield, bowed finish upward. (REMEMBER, in case you get this wrong, it is hard to fix.) Press it against the windshield for at least sixty seconds; hold on a bit longer in case you can.
12. When you release the pressure, the button ought to be affixed to the glass. If it is not, repeat steps 1-11; you ought to have material left for one retry. One time the button is on the windshield, wait at least an hour before continuing with this procedure.
13. After waiting an hour or more for the adhesive to set properly, you can try to reattach the mirror. Carefully slide the attachment receptacle onto the button & push down until you listen to a click. In some instances, you may need to fasten the button to the mirror with a tiny screw (see Step 3).
14. Tidy the mirror with alcohol & adjust it to your liking.
